The Black Student Union at McHenry Community High School has a full list of activities to celebrate Black History Month this month, and members are hoping the events also help grow the club.

Activities are focused mainly at Upper Campus but club members hope to expand to the Freshman Campus. The club currently does not have freshman members.

MCHS Senior Britiny Kamiru said members of the small club are hoping to increase visibility for Black History Month – a celebration of Black achievements – and gain new members.

“We’re very inclusive,” Kamiru said. “We’re open to every student who wants to join and learn about Black history.”

As part of this year’s Black History Month activities, students will hear about facts or recommendations each day in February during morning announcements. The Musical Minute – music played during passing periods at school – will feature songs from Black artists.

All MCHS teachers have been given a poster to put up in their rooms to show their support.

Kamiru said club members are hoping to provide information on things that aren’t always taught in school. It is important that everyone be welcoming and inclusive to different cultures and backgrounds, she said.

“I’d just like to see people be respectful and considerate of other people’s culture,” Kamiru said.

The following is a full list of Black History Month planned events for February. The Jazz Band performance and lunch activities take place at Upper Campus. Kamiru is hoping to have more younger students join so more can be expanded at Freshman Campus.

  • Morning Celebration with Jazz Band - Feb. 12. Club members hand out wristbands

  • Lunch Activity - Wednesday Feb. 12th during all lunch periods. Students can take a Black History Month quiz and win prizes.

  • Musical Minute will feature songs by Black Artists

  • Facts/Quotes/Book/Movie/TV recommendations added to morning announcements

Kamiru said club members would like to do more outreach, such as helping out at sporting events. Hopefully adding new members will help, she said.
