This year’s Writers Week celebration of writing and literacy includes a visit from a 1999 McHenry Community High School graduate who has gone on to become an author and a poet whose work was recognized on the international stage.

McHenry alum Elizabeth Holden, author of “Mighty Millie Novak” visits the Freshman Campus on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The day before, Maggie Smith, author of “Good Bones,” a collection of poetry featuring the viral poem from 2016 by the same name, will visit Upper Campus.

The annual Writers Week is planned to coincide with the Poetry Slam for sophomore English classes that involves students composing their own poems and competing before judges. The annual daylong Poetry Slam is Friday, Feb. 7.

Also, students in AP Literature classes will have the opportunity to learn directly from Smith through a workshop in the afternoon on Feb. 4.

And throughout the week, the English Department will recognize student writers who have been nominated for excellent work by their teachers.
