McHenry Community High School kicks off 2025 by hosting the school’s first-ever Cool School Polar Plunge fundraiser on Feb. 1 at Upper Campus to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.
By participating in the Cool School Challenge, students, staff and the community have a chance to support the cause while competing against other schools.
McHenry High School students will see special promotions at school in January to prepare for the event. Special Olympics provides the four pools to Upper Campus for the cold water event. Participants can take the plunge outside in the south parking lot at Upper Campus. It all starts at 9 a.m. on Feb. 1.
A special fundraising page has been created for the community to donate to the cause or sign up to be a “plunger.” Those willing to take the plunge are asked to raise $100 each for the experience.
Mitch Stengel, director of student activities at McHenry Community High School, said the school will also be raising money in the buildings to help make sure each participant reaches that $100 goal. The school set an overall goal of $10,000 for the event.
Stengel said he’s excited to have the school participate to not only raise money but also awareness. Special Olympics is a global organization hosting sports competitions for those with disabilities. MCHS students annually participate in track and field, bocce ball and basketball competitions.
“I hope that students understand and become familiar with Special Olympics,” Stengel said.
One of the ways the school will raise money is by setting out jars during lunch periods for students and staff to donate. There will also be large thermometers to track fundraising progress.
