Organizers of this year’s McHenry Community High School homecoming are adding some new surprises to fulfill the theme of The Greatest Homecoming while celebrating 100 years for the high school system.
One new aspect is a Pack the Point event on Oct. 6 at Miller Point Park to celebrate the start of homecoming immediately after the parade through downtown McHenry. It will feature food trucks, music – including live music – and includes the traditional rally and coronation of homecoming royalty.
Grace Hunt, president of the school’s Student Council, said they’ll also have some carnival-like games at the Pack the Point event to go along with the overall theme.
Hunt said she’s hoping for a great turnout at Pack the Point to kick off a full week of homecoming activities, including a spirit week, Powder Puff football, Friday night football and the dance on Oct. 12.
“We really wanted something big,” Hunt said. “I really like this theme.”
This year’s parade is a little different, too. It will start at Veterans Memorial Park then head south on Green Street to Freshman Campus (formerly East Campus). The parade kicks off at noon, and music starts at Pack the Point at the same time.
After the parade, participants can head over to Miller Point Park for the rally and coronation, which starts around 1:15 p.m. and also features this year’s Distinguished Graduate Erica Borggren. Live music will be provided by Forever Flannel. Food trucks will be Dirty Bird, Little Rock Stock Cafe, That Guy With the Hawaiian Shirt, and Toasty Cheese.
Another new feature this year is that the Student Council hired a new company, Boom Entertainment, to produce the dance. Hunt said she hopes students love the new experience.
They’re planning to carry the circus and carnival theme through the dance with circus stages and tents, and carnival games and acts.
