Two new clubs are forming at McHenry Community High School and organizers are putting out the call for new members.
EmpowerHER is replacing the Activism Club to become more focused on supporting young women and gender equality. Advisor Stacy Rockweiler, an English teacher at Upper Campus, said this club evolved from the work the Activism Club has done in the past, including hosting an International Women’s Day and a 2022 event to mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX, a federal law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex.
"My hope is to provide a safe space to empower young women to be the change agents in the world," Rockweiler said. The first meeting for EmpowerHER is Monday, Sept. 16 in Room 338 at Upper Campus.
The new club with a first meeting coming up is a new chapter of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) for future health care professionals. It is open to all MCHS biomedical science students. The first meeting is Sept. 26 in Room 370 at Upper Campus.
Biomed Instructor Leah Pelletier said the club will be student-led but she's looking forward to the competitions students will be able to enter. Community service projects and career exploration will also be part of the club's work, Pelletier said.
Also new this winter will be a skiing/snowboarding club with PE Instructor Jacob Guardalabene. The club plans on a few skiing/snowboarding trips this winter. Also this year, the former Trading Card Club is becoming the Table Top Gaming Club.
