For the third year in a row, McHenry Community High School will host a celebration Sunday for veterans returning from an Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. as well as the group of student journalists who accompanied them.
The “welcome home” event will be held Sunday, Aug. 25 in the main gym at Upper Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Road, McHenry. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and buses carrying veterans and students are expected at 11:30 a.m.
More than 50 veterans along with their supporters, three Warrior Student Media students and Instructor John Aubert, are set to leave Thursday for the three-day trip to Washington D.C. to visit military monuments, Arlington National Cemetery, and more. As in years past, student journalists document the trip through social media, Warrior Weekly video and McHenry Messenger newspaper articles. During the Sunday’s celebration, there will be performances from the MCHS band, choir and cheerleading team. The public is invited and encouraged to join the welcome ceremony.
At school, students have been invited to participate by making letters and posters for veterans for Sunday’s celebration. More than 120 students stayed after school at Freshman Campus and Upper Campus Wednesday to write letters and make posters for the Honor Flight group.
The Honor Flight trip is coordinated by the Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois. In 2022, McHenry Community High School hosted its first welcome ceremony and sent student journalists to cover the trip.
