Gale Burke earned Staff Member of the Month before retiring from 15-year career at MCHS

Instructional Assistant Gale Burke capped a 15-year career with McHenry Community High School District 156 with a Staff Member of the Month award for February 2023.

Soon after, Burke retired as someone former colleagues say is always willing to help out.

Burke was honored earlier this spring at Freshman Campus, formerly East Campus, where she has worked in a variety of support positions since coming to work at the high school. Burke said one of the things that inspired her in her work is working through challenges with students.

Working with students is what she’ll miss most after she retires.

“They can sure keep you on your toes and some even worm their way into your heart,” she said.

Burke has three children (two of whom attended the former East Campus) and five grandsons. She’s looking forward to spending more time with her family.

Kyle Hobson, associate principal, thanked Burke for her contributions over the years during the award and retirement ceremonies.

“She’s always someone who is super willing to step up and help out wherever it is needed,” Hobson said.

In 2015, Burke, who was then working in security, received the Spirit of ‘24 award at the former East Campus for making a difference. The award was named in honor of the year the school opened.
