Senior Decision Day event

McHenry Community High School celebrated the wide variety of next steps for the Class of 2024 with an all-school Senior Decision Day event May 2 at Upper Campus.

In addition to congratulating the 550 senior students, the event is meant to inspire younger students to start thinking about what they want to do after high school.

Postsecondary plans included apprenticeships, vocational training, military service, and college. Many students plan to enter the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and others.

McHenry County College was again the top destination for students furthering their schooling after graduation. Some of the other top schools include Illinois State University, Iowa State University, Northern Illinois University and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Jeff Prickett, McHenry High School Upper Campus principal, said plans are bound to change along the way. But he congratulated seniors for making that first important step toward their future.

“Don’t let life happen to you,” Prickett said. “You’ve got to start by making a decision.”

Curtis Menke, college and career counselor, also congratulated seniors for firming up their plans, and noted they’ve had a challenging high school experience with COVID-19 at the start and delays through FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

“You’ve been through a lot. I’m just so grateful that you’re here today," Menke said.

The entire event was streamed live by student journalists with the Warrior Weekly. Watch it

Following the event, seniors were treated to a picnic lunch.
