Multilingual Program Services

Qualifying for Multilingual Services:

To qualify for multilingual services at McHenry Community High School, a parent/guardian must indicate during registration on the Home Language Survey that a language other than or in addition to English is spoken in the home. The district will then screen the student within 30 days of enrollment to determine if the student qualifies for multilingual services. Students are assessed in the areas of listening, speaking, writing, reading.

The Illinois State Board of Education has determined the assessment that is universally used and the qualifying scores for admittance to the program. All students are given the WIDA screener. If the student earns a 5.0 or above in the oral language sections (speaking and listening) AND a 4.2 literacy composite (reading and writing) on the WIDA screener, they are considered English proficient and will not qualify for multilingual services. If the student does not qualify for multilingual services, the parent/guardian will be notified in writing within 10 days from the initial screener.
